Baboucar and friends – Senegalese Rhythms on the Bougarabou

LAST MINUTE GIG - organised at 5pm on Monday 20 July 2026!
German jazz musicians Joshua Weiss and Melanie Streitmatter collaborate with Senegalese bougarabou drummer Baboucar Diedhiou, whom Joshua first met while studying bougarabou drumming in the Casamance region of southern Senegal. Baboucar is the son of the well-known Casamance drummer Bacary Ole and continues his important legacy performing and teaching throughout the region, and now in the UK.
The three musicians have now reunited in Totnes after Joshua and Melanie transported Baboucar's bougarabou drums from Senegal to the UK. Their project brings together jazz and the rhythmic traditions of Casamance, creating music based on listening, improvisation and shared musical experience. Together they explore the connections between these traditions in performance and collaboration.
