Event Type

Genre : Music - Folk/blues/world

Description

The Brothers Gillespie are Northumbrian troubadours with a sound driven by the interplay of guitar and fiddle and two voices that instinctively weave beautiful harmonies. James and Sam Gillespie play traditional songs from Northumberland, Scotland, Ireland, the USA and Brittany. Their music is inspired by the power of place, the land and of wildness, poetry and storytelling.

'The sibling duo from Northumberland have an unrestrained vocal interplay that sometimes approaches the ardent delivery of the Incredible String Band, and at times they share Robin Williamson and Mike Heron's gift for writing songs that sound ancient, or as if they were formed by the elements. The Brothers Gillespie album The Fell shows off British acoustic music in its best possible light.' Folk Radio UK

'A rare treat. The Brothers Gillespie hail from the Hexham area and make the kind of folk music that is stepped in tradition and authenticity in exactly the same way as, say, Mumford and Sons are not. The songs are sparse guitar and fiddle being the principal instruments on offer yet have a warmth to them which is down to the pair's superb harmonising. These are the kind of tunes that appear to have been constructed from bracken and wildflowers and are quietly superb. If you like proper folk music, then do seek them out'. The Crack

Johnny Campbell is a humorous storyteller and loves to recall tales of touring twenty countries (and counting) where he's plied his trade. Embracing traditional music from Europe and sometimes frantic Bluegrass style picking, Johnny performs mostly self-penned inspiring songs of protest, migration and debauchery.

'One of folk's brightest rising stars.' - Bright Young Folk

'Johnny's got the personality to complement the courage of his convictions.' - The Living Tradition

'The recurring theme of forced migration, caused by war or by needing work runs through the album. This enhances the recording which has a real feel of the field recordings made by collectors of early folk song.' Fatea Magazine
