The Hard Way is a one-woman show that tells the story of Hannah Mitchell; self-taught, self-made woman, campaigner, speaker, writer, suffragette, councilor and magistrate.
The show travels from a remote hilltop farm in the Derbyshire Peak District to Manchester city magistrate. With two weeks' formal schooling behind her and through sheer force of character, Hannah escapes domestic drudgery and leaves home aged 14, exchanging one exploitative situation for another. In 1906 she finds herself face to face with Winston Churchill at a public meeting and then spends time in Strangeways prison before forging on to achieve her true destiny.
Combining storytelling and song, acclaimed musician and composer Louise Jordan brings to life this fascinating and inspiring tale that celebrates one woman's determination to take power in the face of insurmountable barriers.
