New Zealand's Miss June are headed to the Port Mahon as part of their world tour for the band's forthcoming debut album Bad Luck Party.
The LP comes out on September 6 via Frenchkiss Records. The band recently released the third cut 'Enemies' from the upcoming album, and the Line Of Best Fit said that it's a big step forward for Miss June and a determined signal of intent ahead of their debut with front person Annabel Liddell in prime form, destabilising not just in her performance but her lyrics.
The New York Times called their last single 'Best Girl' a "nod back at a pantheon of powerful statements and sounds... calibrated for 2019 ears craving a clever, irresistible outlet." Consequence of Sound said 'Best Girl' was a bolstered, anthemic pop-punk jam for the next generation and in the UK, BBC Radio 1 called it a creative, forward-thinking piece of punk music this band are brilliant.
Described as some unholy union between Sonic Youth and Le Tigre, the Auckland four piece have built a strong live reputation, earning support slots with the likes of the Foo Fighters, Shellac, Wolf Alice, Idles and Die! Die! Die!
Support comes from Lazybones. who are one fuzzy bass guitar, amplified organ and drums, creating a trashy, unapologetic, to-the-point sound; comparable to the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Slaves, Idles and Royal Blood. Hailing from Brighton (which seems to be where every great new band is from these days) they have a new single 'Trash Talk' out on 9th October, and their earlier singles 'Zombie', 'Snake' and 'Crazy' released on SaySomethingRecords - and 'Heart Beat Like A Drum' and 'Fashion Victim' released on Killing Moon were picked up by the likes of BBC Radio 1 Rock Show, BBC Radio 1 Hype Chart, BBC Radio 1 Indie Show NEXT WAVE, Kerrang!, Planet Rock, BBC Introducing, BBC 6Music, Radio X, Amazing Radio, Upset Magazine and many more.
Also joining the bill are local grunge gang Grub, whose recently released EP Some Kind of Way to Live was described by local music magazine Nightshift as 'molten, gooey garage rock riffage, slathered in grunge attitude and 70s rock' and compared them to The Stooges, The MC5, Mudhoney, Nirvana and Iron Butterfly - which says it better than we ever could.
And we're also welcoming Grand Palace Scam, a new Oxford band with a dark alt-rock sound, reminiscent of Shudder to Think or a moody Pixies, and the vocals have hints of Iceage or Shame in them. Can't wait to see what they've got.
This event is 18+, and regarding accessibility there are several short flights of stairs in the Port Mahon, and the venue room is up a narrow flight of stairs.
Finally, Freak Scene shows are inclusive shows, and we want people to feel safe. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, bigotry and general dickery of any kind will not be tolerated. If you feel like you can't handle that, feel free not to come. And if you experience any of these, speak to your nearest Scene Freak (we'll probably be hanging about the PA/door) or to venue staff.
