Rattle on the Stovepipe
Rattle on the Stovepipe are :
Dave Arthur (banjo, guitar, melodeon), Pete Cooper (fiddle), Dan Stewart (banjo, guitar, fiddle).
Rattle play Anglo-Appalachian songs, ballads, and dance tunes. Many of the tunes started life in the British Isles and went across to America with various waves of emigrants.
Some material came back in the 19th century with the touring American Minstrel Shows, The lyrics and music underwent changes during this trans-Atlantic exchange.
It's this mix of English, Irish, Scots, and Appalachian that interests us - some songs and tunes changed quite drastically, some remained remarkably true to their 18th
and 19th century origins.
Pete Cooper is one of the leading fiddle teachers in the UK, and is Director of the London Fiddle School. He runs workshops all over the world, and has published several fiddle tutors. His teaching covers Appalachian, Scottish, Irish, English and Scandinavian fiddle styles.
Dan Stewart is a banjo, guitar and fiddle teacher from Sussex. Widely recognised as one of the top
Old Time banjo players in the UK.
Dave Arthur is a musician, writer and storyteller. A particular interest is in the folktales, lore, and traditional beliefs of the British Isles concerning witchcraft, superstition and fairy-lore. For many years he was a regular writer, researcher and presenter for BBC radio and television on folksong and folklore. He wrote the official biography of one of the founders of the British Folk Revival, A.L. 'Bert' Lloyd.
Rattle have recorded 8 well reviewed CDs for Wildgoose Records over the last few years.
