Workshop:10:30am - 1:30pm

Improvisation workshop with Stan Sulzmann & Nikki Iles.

This session will focus on developing aural skills through improvisation. We will work on repertoire that lends itself to motivic improvising and in the course of the workshop we will give you some ideas on developing melodic solos that have a sense of narrative and purpose. Although no previous improvising experience is necessary you will get the most out of this session if your instrumental ability is upwards of grade 5.

You are welcome to observe if you would prefer not to participate directly. Above all, this session is meant to be fun and to give you a chance to have a go!

Stan Sulzmann

'But a shining light of the whole attractive enterprise is the presence of Stan Sulzmann, who seems to sound more personal and hauntingly moving than ever.' John Fordham, Jazz UK

'It simply doesn't get any better than this.' John Kelman

'Sulzmann the classy composer' John Fordham

Nikki Iles

A committed jazz educator, she is senior lecturer at Middlesex University, visiting professor at the Guildhall school and the Royal Academy in London, and Jazz Advisor to the ABRSM. She was nominated for the JAZZ EDUCATION AWARD at the 2007 and 2009 PARLIAMENTARY JAZZ AWARDS and is a nominee for two 2019 PARLIAMENTARY JAZZ AWARDS: 'Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year' and 'Jazz Education Award'.

'A formidable UK jazz presence rising to her full height.' The Guardian (John Fordham)

'Iles is one of the most refreshing figures to have emerged in the UK scene in recent times, with a liquid sound and supple, obliquely resolved phrasing as an improviser.'  The Guardian (John Fordham)

'Formidably creative...'  The Guardian (John Fordham)

'Nikki Iles is a pianist of extraordinary imagination who thrives on fugitive melodies' The Observer (Dave Gelly)

'Iles displayed the rhythmic surprises, shape shifting phrases, playful dialogue with a mix of ruggedness and reflection that make her comparable with the great John Taylor.'  The Guardian (John Fordham)
