This gig features a preview of the winter tour repertoire, with two elements to it;
1.we will personalise work by contemporary artists like Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny with our own signatures, and add my own compositions based on the structures of popular classics by composers like Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Mack Gordon and Harry Warren (in the same way bebop was developed from an existing popular repertoire of its time), building on my approach with the album Personal Standards, thus exploiting the common consciousness to give the audience a way into our explorations.
2. We'll be presenting my own compositions, grown out of improvisational responses to visual stimuli (notably the landscapes of JMW Turner seen from the exact locations at which he painted them). By doing this we aim to forge the last link in the chain between conception and reception of the music: from my spontaneous, emotional response (recorded improvisation), through transcription and composition, to performance ultimately connecting the audience with the origin of the music they are hearing.
