Description

Lullaby for Jacob Rees-Mogg, featuring Benn Clatworthy (tenor, soprano saxes) John Donaldson (piano) Simon Thorpe (bass) Darren Beckett (drums) Door/food 7.0 pm, music 8.30 Students £12 (see note below)

"Clatworthy is a jazz musician following in the footsteps of his master and king John Coltrane. He takes no prisoners and is constantly in search of the next level. If you get an opportunity to hear him, take your seat belt and buckle it tight." - Henry Franklin, bassist (Freddie Hubbard, Hugh Masekela) "Benn's artistry involves all the knowledge, passion, control, emotion and inventiveness expected from a true master." - Otmoro Ruiz, pianist/arranger (Grammy nominee)

"British born Los Angeles saxman Benn Clatworthy played an impressive set which was just as sharp and smart as the musician himself, who arrived on stage looking like a Mad Men cast member in his crisp grey suit and magenta tie. Whilst Rod Youngs scoured each nook and cranny for some intriguing drum fills and pianist John Donaldson and bassist Simon Thorpe were given plenty of room to explore their own limitless prowess, Clatworthy seemed to empty his very soul into his sax to produce some surprisingly delicate melodies. His version of Lennon/McCartney's 'Here, There and Everywhere' was unlike the usual jazz readings of the piece, with some interesting repositionings of melody and a dreamlike mood that was sustained throughout. Clatworthy also performed a strikingly original version of 'Limehouse Blues', founded unconventionally on an attractive minor key." - Northern Sky
