Austerity are a three piece post-punk band from Brighton. Their sound is a high octane collision of swaggering bass and drum grooves, scratchy, chaotic guitar playing and snotty, snarling vocals which spit bile on complex political ideas but always remaining rooted in everyday life. Citing Scritti Politti, XTC and Wire as influences, they are most frequently compared to Gang of Four, Zounds and Fugazi.
As well as being influenced by seventies post-punk, Austerity sits well with the recent resurgence of angry political crypto-punk bands such as Sleaford Mods, Idles, Squid and Fontaines D.C.
The band recently secured two album sync tracks in forthcoming psychological horror film, Saint Maud (Film Four / BFI). Directed by rising star Rose Glass, and starring Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle.
With two sold out limited edition mix tapes, a stream of potent singles, two UK tours, blistering live radio sessions for Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Melita Dennett (BBC Introducing), plus a successful stint in New York under their belt collective belts...
Austerity are set to release debut album Anarcho Punk Dance Party on Friday 1st November via Every Man His Own Football Records (digital) and Quiet Backwater Records (cd & casette)
