Description

The Mark Cherrie Quartet comprises of Mark Cherrie on steel pan, John Donaldson on piano, Mick Hutton on double bass and Eric Ford on drums. Mark was originally introduced to the steel pan by his father, Ralph Cherrie, a musician himself who along with two other members of the Russ Henderson Trio, took to the streets of Westbourne Grove in 1967 and ended up starting the Notting Hill Carnival. Flash forward to the present day and Mark has taken this unique instrument and completely recontextualised it. Whilst still having a love of all the musical forms of the Caribbean, Mark has been forging a path into the world of jazz music, creating a new, fresh sound in the process. After recording their debut album in 2016, the album was released on Trio Records in February last year. Musically, the band steers away from the Caribbean but instead plays contemporary jazz by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock to jazz reworkings of popular tunes by Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana, as well as some original pieces. Since the album was released, the band have garnered great reviews by many of this country's foremost jazz critics, including a 4 star review in the Guardian and was included in Dave Gelly's top ten jazz albums of 2018. The album launch gig took place at the 606 Club and was packed out. The band embarked on a UK tour last year in support of the album, generously sponsored by the Arts Council England and this year played 3 consecutive sold out nights at Ronnie Scott's. Since the album's release, the album has also picked up a considerable amount of radio play from JazzFM, Radio 6 and other regional BBC stations.

The other musicians in the quartet are amongst some of the foremost jazz players in the UK today. John Donaldson won the prize for best soloist at the San Sebastian International Jazz Competition in 1980, before moving to California in 1982, working with some of the finest musicians there, including Eddie Henderson. John Donaldson returned to London in 1993 and has worked with Iain Ballamy, Art Themen, Clark Tracy and many others. Eric Ford is in demand internationally at drum clinics and festivals with stellar jazz group Partikel and many other international artists. Mick Hutton is a first-call bassist and has worked with so many jazz greats, including Harry Beckett, Julian Argüelles, Iain Ballamy, Django Bates and Ken Stubbs (First House), the Chris Biscoe Sextet and Bill Bruford's Band Earthworks.
