Glasgow born Bassist, Composer and Band Leader Calum Gourlay brings his brand new quartet and first small band album to tour the UK in 2019.
Featuring music written especially for and inspired by the band members who are also 3 founding members of his big band. Helena Kay on Saxophone, Kieran McLeod on Trombone and James Maddren on drums.
They are celebrating the release of Calum's first small band album New Ears on Ubuntu music.
This is the last gig of their 2019 tour supported by Arts Council England.
Calum has held two residencies at the Vortex Jazz Club Thelonious (from 2015-17) playing the music of Thelonious Monk with Martin Speake & Hans Koller & a continuing monthly Big Band residency from 2017 providing London with a regular night of new compositions & arrangements.
As part of the Kit Downes Trio he played on Mercury Award nominated 'Golden' (2009).
His debut album Calum Gourlay - Live at The Ridgeway (2015) received critical acclaim, not least because of a confident format a solo live recording in front of an intimate audience.
In 2015 he was a finalist for the International Society of Bassists Scott LaFaro Prize.
He has been a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith since 2006.
Calum grew up playing jazz in Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland & Tommy Smith's Youth Jazz Orchestra in which he was the first bassist selected from across Scotland aged 16.
In 2004 he was the only bassist enrolled for the jazz course at The Royal Academy of Music graduating 1st class honours in 2008.
He has been a regular band member for Sam Leak, Tom Bancroft, Fini Bearman, Trish Clowes & many other bands.
Since 2018 Calum has been a professor of Jazz Bass at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. He has also taught at the Royal Academy of Music and conducted his big band music at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
