Storytelling at the Feast of Fools, Feb 5th 2020:
Kate Corkery, The Sweetshop on the Shore
Kate's story is an unmissable performance of joy, compassion, laughter, and sadness. In 2012 she was commissioned by the Festival of the Edge and this was the result, later winning an Outstanding Storytelling Performance of the Year Award.
It was a performance that stayed in the mind long afterwards.
In 2019 Kate performed it again at a Halsway Manor storytelling weekend, and it was even better!
"The Sweetshop on the Shore" is rooted in Kate's own childhood. In a village on the shore of Cork Harbour an only child struggles to make sense of the world.
As the River Lee ebbs and flows nearby, regular customers come and go to a small sweet shop that is at the heart of that community. The stories they share linger in her imagination and grow a life of their own.
There's something of "Under Milk Wood" about the cast of characters, but brought to life with a clearer eye, mixed with deep understanding.
'When are we old enough to know better? How strong is a piece of string? Is seven really the age of reason when we are supposed to know right from wrong, and true from false?'
