M G Boulter and Samantha Whates have revisited their collaboration once more on their new EP, How to Read. Both prolific and respected songwriters in their own right the duo originally met in 2013 and soon produced 'The Boatswain's Manual' (2014), a nautically flavoured EP drawing on their shared coastal back stories (Samantha grew up in Montrose on the east coast of Scotland and M G by the Thames on the Essex coast).
Now, inspired by their love of all things books, the two songwriters have used their thematic approach to explore the wider human condition beyond the bookshop window. The EP collects songs which demonstrate both Whates and Boulter's ability to write engaging, emotive and sometimes playful songs all framed by fingerpicked acoustic guitar and double bass arrangements.
Despite their busy schedules (Whates has recently released two albums, one her solo album Waiting Rooms and the other with her band PicaPica for Rough Trade Records. Boulter has similarly released a clutch of EPs and albums on Hudson Records, as well as recently touring with Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott by personal invitation) both artists grabbed time between projects, often in coffee shops in Southend on Sea, to write tracks
such as 'Agatha Christie' and the title track 'How to Read'.
In collaboration with producer, multi-instrumentalist and arranger Douglas Whates How to Read is due for release on 6 March 2020 on limited edition CD with the duo undertaking a bookshop tour in March 2020 in support.
