The Emily Askew Band brings together an adventurous collective of renowned musicians, breaking boundaries with their creative contemporary folk and early music. Their lively performances excite and captivate audiences with their wild dance tunes, haunting vocal harmonies and beautiful lyrical melodies.
The use of early instruments including the vielle, viola d'amore, bagpipes, shawm, frame drums, medieval bells and recorders, with modern folk instruments such as the guitar, violin, cajon and electronics, creates an innovative musical experience unlike any other bands on the folk scene today.
They will be performing a programme of early music / folk with a festive theme for Christmas entitled: Nowell, Nowell.
This is a programme bringing to life the musical gems of Christmas past - songs about winter and this festive time of year interspersed with energetic dances and moving instrumentals. Including Gaudete, The Gower Wassail, Nowell Nowell, To Drive the Cold Winter Away.
"Mixing folk and early music with beauty and precision"
The Guardian
"...the musicians bring an all-embracing and highly affectionate warmth, just right for a beautiful music we should all really cherish.'
Northern Sky Mag
'A group of superb musicians pursue the crossover region between early music and folk - a popular idea, but one which has rarely been done well ...... The quality of the playing is simply outstanding: clean, accurate but with life, spring and imagination, and their feel for the pieces they play is in a similar league.'
