Hailed as A fantastic flamenco guitarist (BBC Radio 3), Samuel Moore is fast establishing himself as one of the UK's leading flamenco musicians. Since 2007 he has performed in venues across the UK, Europe and North America, with past tours involving concerts in Rue-B in New York, The 100 Club in London, the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall in Leeds, Café Universel in Paris, Ely Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral.
In solo concerts Samuel presents beautifully crafted flamenco guitar sets that bring to life the intoxicating rhythms, colours and sounds of Andalucía. Highlights for the forthcoming 2019/20 Concert Season include an intimate lunchtime concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London and a nine date UK tour.
Whilst best known for his work as a soloist, Samuel is also a committed ensemble musician and frequently collaborates with other performers. Current collaborative projects include performing and recording alongside the classical guitarist Michael Christian Durrant, and touring with a handpicked company of flamenco dancers and singers under the ensemble name Flamenco Puro.
In October 2019 Samuel released his first studio album, Guitar the Heart of Spain. Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, Guitar the Heart of Spain marked the culmination of Samuel's unique collaboration with the classical guitarist Michael Christian Durrant, bringing together the worlds of flamenco and classical guitar. Samuel is currently preparing to record his second studio album, The Masters of Flamenco. This solo recording will bring together a selection of compositions inspired by many of the artists who have shaped Samuel's musical journey over the past ten years. Works featured on the album will include Esteban de Sanlúcars' Panaderos Flamencos, Mario Escudero's Impetu and original compositions inspired by Ramón Montoya, Niño Ricardo, Sabicas and Paco de Lucía.
Samuel initially learnt his craft by working with the recordings of great flamenco maestros of the past and producing transcriptions of their pieces. He later became a student of the world-renowned flamenco guitarist Juan Martín. This five-year period of study was funded by Help Musicians UK and contributed to the development of Samuel's skills as a solo guitarist and accompanist. Notably, Samuel was awarded a £10,000 funding grant by Arts Council England in 2019, allowing him to work and study in Spain. The focus of these studies was primarily to refine Samuel's accompaniment skills with some of Andalucía's foremost Gitano (Gypsy) singers, including Antonio Aparecida and the multi award winning Amparo Heredia La Repompilla. Always keen to learn, Samuel has also attended masterclasses with other leading flamenco artists, including the great Paco Peña.
When not on tour or recording, Samuel enjoys passing on his musical knowledge through teaching. Between 2012-2017 he held the permanent teaching post of Course Leader for Flamenco Guitar Studies at the Instituto de Cervantes, the Spanish government's international institute for language and culture. Furthermore, Samuel has also been invited to lead flamenco workshops and present guest lectures at The University of Cambridge, The University of Leeds and Newcastle University. As a testament to his skill for group teaching, Samuel was handpicked by Maestro Juan Martín to co-run flamenco guitar courses at the International Guitar Foundation's (IGF) 2015 and 2019 London Guitar Summits. Samuel was also invited to lead group workshops at Maestro Martín's annual International Flamenco Guitar Course in Ronda, Spain between 2016-2018. Maestro Martín later described Samuel as 'an incredible teacher of flamenco'. Samuel continues to work with a select number of private students in the UK alongside presenting workshops for guitar societies and flamenco collectives.
Amongst Samuel's other notable achievements are the establishment and overseeing of the Leeds International Flamenco Festival between 2013-2017 and working as an orchestral transcriber for the Gil Evans Estate between 2010-2013. The legendary jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, a former member of the Gil Evans Orchestra, later described Samuel's reconstructed scores as Masterful The results are truly special. Also, in 2017 Samuel was commissioned to compose music for the major film Lost In London, directed by Woody Harrelson. Samuel also appears in the film itself performing three of his solo guitar compositions in a scene featuring the actor Owen Wilson.
