Every now and then a project comes along that makes you sit up and take notice; be it a change of musical direction, an unexpected collaboration, or perhaps the addition of new instruments. Well, Pete Gow has embraced all of those elements and more in his first year as a solo artist since the demise of the much-loved Case Hardin.
His album Here There's No Sirens was received with much critical acclaim (including a nomination for the AMA UK's album of the year) and made many Best of 2019 lists in the music press, as well as becoming a firm fan favourite.
The expansive, anthem-like, electric guitar templates and palettes, be they rock or country-tinged, here are replaced by a stripped back, acoustic songs, ballads even, augmented by brass, drums, organ, piano and string arrangements, wrote David Pratt on Folk Radio UK.
Whilst musically this is a departure which sees an exploration of new vistas, this is also an intensely personal collection in which his raw emotions and, at times, almost forensic exposition of relationships are laid bare through lyrics which, as with previous work, can often be dark, foreboding and left-field.
Writing the string arrangements, as well as producing the album and playing many of the instruments was Joe Bennett (Dreaming Spires, St Etienne), with Finn Kenny on drums and backing vocals both artists having played with Bennett Wilson Poole when they visited Great Easton last year.
The live shows have proven to be every bit as good as the album, with the number of musicians onstage often reaching double figures; the string section adding a special and unusual element to the live experience. In fact, the need to add extra songs into the live shows led to Pete 'accidentally' writing a second album last year; The Fragile Line CD being available only at live shows last year, but now available as a digital release.
This promises to be a very special evening.
