Corbett's playing is rousing and fierily expressive and his band are right on top of it." - Jazzwise
1959 was one of the greatest years in jazz during which some of the most significant and successful recordings were made: Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue'; 'Mingus Ah Um'; Brubeck's 'Take Five'; Ornette Coleman's ground-breaking 'The Shape of Things To Come'; Horace Silver's ''Blowing The Blues Away' and many more. Now, six decades on, this outstanding quintet celebrate the music from this landmark year.
Award-winning trumpeter and long-standing Fleece favourite Bryan Corbett is highly regarded for his technical fluency and his imaginative flow of ideas. He is a great performer and interpreter of the jazz standards repertoire, as well as an artist who pushes the boundaries, writing and performing original works. Saxophonist Chris Bowden works widely as an arranger and performer with a highly individual style. He first came to prominence with his 1996 funk/acid/latin-jazz album 'Time Capsule'. He was here last year with his 'Unlikely Being' project, which also featured Bryan.
Matt Ratcliffe studied jazz piano at Birmingham Conservatoire with the British Jazz pianist, Liam Noble and he was tutored in an ensemble by bassist Dave Holland. He has performed with a wide range of jazz musicians in clubs and festivals across the U.K. Originally from California, Tom Hill has been a stalwart of the Birmingham scene since the 1990s. He has performed and recorded with top jazz artists like Art Farmer and singers like Mel Torme. He will also be familiar to some TV viewers as the voice of Tony the Tiger in the Kellogg's Frosties adverts! Carl Hemmingsley is an immensely talented drummer who combines rhythmic drive with great musical subtlety. He currently plays with Ruby Turner and he has performed with John Dankworth, Julian Arguelles, Guy Barker and, in his most recent visit to Birmingham, with Wynton Marsalis.
