Doghouse Roses, Norrie Mcculloch & John Alexander

Event Type

Genre : Music - Folk/blues/world

Description

A fantastic triple bill featuring 3 of the finest acts from across Scotland, Doghouse Roses, Norrie McCulloch & John Alexander in an intimate up close gig.

DOGHOUSE ROSES One of Scotland's most acclaimed pairings, Iona MacDonald and Paul Tasker excel in delivering songs which are intimate and warm, MacDonald's honeyed voice complemented Tasker's superb picking skills. Often compared to the likes of Sandy Denny era Fairport Convention along with other luminaries from that era, Americana UK describing them as our version of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings after a sold out headline show at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival. The duo have been playing together for 15 years, combining harmony vocals, guitars and clawhammer banjo, releasing their fourth album to widespread acclaim in November 2019. They established their reputation through the UK and Central Europe, touring on their own and as members of Robert Fisher's 'Willard Grant Conspiracy, have swapped songs and jammed with E-Street band member Eddie Mannion and Vinnie Lopez, and shared stages with bands from The Mavericks to Televison

The new recording 'We are Made of Light' is a mixture of new songs, and previously unrecorded songs collected through the 15 year history of the band. There is little posturing or mythologizing here; just a set of songs, worked up during tours in 2018 and recorded live in the studio directly after the last shows. Half of the 12 songs feature just Iona Macdonald and Paul Tasker on guitars, banjo and harmony vocals, while the addition of Paul's schoolfriend Neil Allan on drums and strings arranged by Pete Harvey and played by the Pumpkinfield trio add extra dimension and some contrast to the intensity of the duo performances.

NORRIE McCULLOCH Norrie McCulloch is a singer-songwriter and award-winning visual artist originally from Ayrshire he currently lives and works out of of Stirling, Scotland. McCulloch's songs are a tangle up of folk, indie and country influences that manage to stay true to his Scottish roots, equating to a style that offers a welcome touch of originality and garnering critical acclaim with Americana UK naming McCulloch 'An astonishingly good songwriter', Maverick Magazine calling his sound 'Sublime indie-folk' and David Esson of Scottish Daily Mail describing songs as 'Caledonia, Folk & Country combined perfectly'.

McCulloch's beginnings as a musician was as a busker on the streets of Glasgow, later going on to travel further afield with his guitar and busking throughout Europe. He helped set up and was constant figure behind a weekly residency at the legendary Victoria Bar with band - 'The Wufniks' (later called - 'Dunghose') which featured: Craig Ward (dEUS), Glaswegian illustrator Adrian McMurchie, guitarist Bob Christie and Matt Harvey & Fozzy from folk band 'The Clachies'. More recently McCulloch was also responsible for promoting and often performing at the popular 'Fireside Sessions' music nights in Stirlingshire.

The debut album from McCulloch 'Old Lovers Junkyard' was released in 2014, followed by 'These Mountain Blues' in 2016, 'Bare Along The Branches' in 2017 and the 'Townes Blues EP' later that same year. A new album titled 'Compass' is due for release on May 31st 2019.

He has collaborated regularly on recordings and live with multi instrumentalist Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub / Belle & Sebastian), Stuart Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen), Iain Thompson (live sound w/ Phosphorescent), Shane Connolly (Alasdair Roberts Band / Issho Taiko Drummers) and Iain Sloan (Wynntown Marshals) Aside from writing and recording music Norrie also has many years experience as a tutor of songwriting and visual art to youth and community groups and was awarded special recognition for his work with young people through the Princes Trust by HRH Prince Charles. He composed the soundtrack to the 'Look Out' theatre production 'Hanging Tree' at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his visual artwork has been commissioned for use within the Ken Loach feature film - 'Aye Fond Kiss' and the David Mackenzie film - 'Hallam Foe'.

Since his debut album release in 2014 McCulloch has played shows in the UK, USA and Europe. He has secured slots at festivals including Belladrum, SummerTyne, Festival 2018, Southern Fried and Glasgow Americana. He continues to work regularly on community based creative projects and whether performing shows solo or alongside collaborators he continues to receive excellent reviews for his live performances and recorded output.

JOHN ALEXANDER Songwriter John Alexander's songwriting style is one inspired by landscapes , life and weather, which he fuses together with his experiences of living in Glasgow.

Alexander's songs have been honed through his solo acoustic performances and have formed the basis for his live performances which have featured a successful run of sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe with the aptly titled Dustbowl Blues with a Glasgow Kick.

His latest release 'Of These Lands' follows on further down the dusty and rocky road with a weathered collection of 11 songs that have been scratched from time spent on his recent journeys.

Alexander's previous releases have been well received and his album 'Rain For Sale' was successful in obtaining placements for his song 'Nowhere to Go' on the US television show The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, and 'Let Me Die' being used in hit Netflix show Longmire.

Alexander's influences include John Martyn, Greg Brown, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters all of which show themselves in his soulful lyrics, strong guitar licks and storytelling skills.
