THE IMPRESSIONISTS

Maurice RAVEL (1875?1937) Sonatine (1906)
1 Mode?re? ? 2 Mouvement de menuet ? 3 Anime?
Ravel is often associated with the avante garde impressionist movement in music although he rejected the term. His experimental compositions using harmonic textures to focus on mood and atmophere were deplored by the conservative Paris Conservatoire from which he was expelled twice. Twenty years later he was being hailed as France?s greatest living composer.

George GERSHWIN (1898?1937) 3 Preludes (1926)
Gershwin greatly admired Ravel and during a stay in Paris in the early 1920s asked the composer for lessons. He received the response, "Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?" The 3 Preludes are famous examples of American classical music as influenced by jazz.

Karol SZYMANOWSKI (1882?1937) 3 Masques op 34 (1915?16)
1 Sche?he?razade ? 2 Tantris le bouffon (Tristan the clown) ? 3 Se?re?nade de Don Juan
Szymanowksi was born into a wealthy Polish family and spent his youth studying music and gaining inspiration from his travels in Europe, the Middle East and the USA. Exempt from military service, he spent the Great War on the family estate in the Ukraine. His compositions are stylistically influenced by the French impressionists. The Masques refer to episodes in legends from three different cultures.

Frank BRIDGE (1879?1941) The Hourglass Suite (1919?20) 1 Dusk ? 2 The Dew Fairy ? 3 The Midnight Tide
Bridge won a scholarship to the RCM in 1899. The penniless young composer survived by combining a career as a jobbing violist, teacher and highly respected conductor, notably deputising for Henry Wood. Benjamin Britten took lessons from Bridge and championed his work. Bridge was inspired especially by the impressionists and the works of Maurice Ravel, with whom he performed on several occasions.
