Silent Running is a 1972 environmental-themed post-apocalyptic science fiction film. It stands alone as a decidedly unique type of
sci-fi journey marked by intimate character work and a melancholic mood. In the future, all plant life on Earth is becoming extinct.
Freeman Lowell, is the resident botanist and ecologist on a spaceship who, with the aid of the ship?s three service robots carefully maintains a variety of plants for their eventual return to Earth and the reforestation of the planet.
Considered by many critics to be a better film than 2001 A Space Odyssey.
