Two wonderfully exciting 20th century pieces, alongside Haydn?s classical work from 200 years earlier. Shostakovich finished the first version of the 9th Quartet in 1961, then ?in an attack of healthy self-criticism, I burnt it in the stove.? Three years later the new Ninth Quartet arrived ? and survived!
