Description
Music - General
terrace cred. presents:
Claire Hamill, celebrating 50 years since recording her first LP by venturing out into a few venues to bring a selection of her music to audiences who are fortunate enough to show an interest.
?Probably the best singer you?ve never heard? - (MOJO).
Actually, you might well have seen her onstage in recent years as lead singer with Yes tribute band Fragile, but Claire Hamill has a resume that reflects a range of influences, styles and a roller coaster career, performing on stages, solo or touring and recording with some of the cream of British acts.
From the North East of England, a recording contract with Island Records saw Claire Hamill leave Convent School for London in 1971, where she released two albums, touring, first with John Martyn, then across Europe and the USA, was tipped as the UK?s Joni Mitchell and guested on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Two albums on The Kinks? Konk label, the first produced by Ray Davies and the second, self-produced at the age of 21, saw more US touring and acquiring an American band.
Exploring further, Claire recorded with Steve Howe of Yes, wrote, recorded and and toured with Wishbone Ash, married the founder of Beggar?s Banquet label, signed to WEA and moved into a more synthesizer based world, appeared on albums by Jon and Vangelis, ?The Friends Of Mr Cairo?, and jazz/funk Morrisey-Mullen plus her own singles.
Cllaire recorded a groundbreaking New Age Chart Number One Album with music used by the BBC ?The Domesday Book? history series. Pastoral rock, Channel 4 videos, electro pop / folk with dance DJ Andrew Warren and a rerelease of her back catalogue followed.
And then, in 2004, Claire found that Eva Cassidy had recorded one of her songs, ?You Take My Breath Away?. That boost allowed a retrospective album and more recordings, but Claire Hamill has continued to record and tour at a pace and scale she has dictated.
In fact, she rang me specifically to ask to come and play this date, wanting to play The Greys.
?My songs are crafted in the hurly burly of life, I roll with the seasons like you do, I occasionally rise to the triumphal summit like you do and I deal with the hardships that come along from time to time, just like you do. I still have songs inside me yearning to come out, I hope you?ll find them relevant.?
Opening the evening is Greys favourite, Sylvie Lewis, FOLK-IT promoter / acoustic performer / star of ?The Lewis Family Christmas Hour? with her father Sir Martyn and Sharon (no relation) Lewis as The Lewis Sisters. A Brighton resident, Sylvie has lived, played, recorded and sung from London to California, Barcelona and Rome. Her voice and songs will provide a perfect complement to Claire?s.
A gorgeous evening of live music promised.
Come and help support these fine artists in the great little, intimate surroundings of The Greys.
