Bossaphonik nights are back!
Kicking off what we're hoping is a whole new season of Bossaphonik events that are in the pipeline, we start off with Cardiff?s Afro Cluster for the first time in Oxford. A colossal 9 piece Afro-funk and hip hop collective reputed as being one of the finest live bands in Wales.
Afro Cluster are built up of a full horn section, a fiery rhythm section, live scratch DJ, with the vocal prowess of MC Skunkadelic adding raps on politically and socially charged themes. The band challenge prejudice and inequality within their messages of positivity and love. Key influences come the socially conscious Latin hip hop of Ozomatli, the king of Afrobeat Fela Kuti, deep jazzy hip hop of The Roots, avant garde funk-rock of Talking Heads and the ambitious jazz funk fusion of Snarky Puppy.
The band have featured extensively on the UK festival circuit with shows at Glastonbury, Womad, Boomtown, Wilderness and have hit the airwaves from DJs at 6 Music such as Craig Charles and Cerys Matthews and Radio 1 Extra DJ Target. They have supported brass band dons Hot 8, Afrofuturists Ibibio Sound Machine and jazz dance don DJ Gilles Peterson.
?The lyrics are politically and socially charged, so it's a band with head and heart in tune. A refreshing concept in this day and age.?
