ArHai are based in London UK and consist of composers Jovana Backovic (vocals, electronics) and Adrian Lever (medieval dulcimer, Bulgarian tambura). Their music explores the intersection of cinematic, traditional and electronic. Drawing on traditions from the Balkans and the UK, alongside original material, the duo performed in 2020 at London's Cafe Oto with a predominantly acoustic set - for the most leaving behind the crunchy looped-beats and effects of their signature sound. The success of the show led to them planning a winter tour in 2021 with a similar acoustic vibe, heading into more intimate venues to deliver their own slant on the traditions they've grown up with.
ArHai began in Belgrade in 1999, their debut Mysterion (2006) was released on major Serbian label PGP, a collaboration with eight musicians performing both composed music and arrangements of traditional songs. The line-up performed at major regional festivals until 2008. The current incarnation began in 2009 and featuring Jovana with UK folk guitarist and Bulgarian tambura player Adrian Lever. The duo released Eastern Roads in 2013 and EP Where Light Resides in 2019. A new album is due in 2022, with the single Immovable released in January 2021.
