?Their music is immensely powerful? - Penny Black Music
?Warm, deep singer-songwriters who have drank from the well of 20th century tradition? Folk Radio UK
A Different Thread is a collaboration between Robert Jackson (from Bristol, UK) and Alicia Best (from Durham, North Carolina, USA). Their sound embraces elements of 70?s folk revival, country, and Appalachian blues.
The duo officially formed after winning Shrewsbury Folk Festival?s open-mic competition in 2017. They went on to land interviews and live sessions on both the BBC and NPR radio and through touring, have garnered a loyal following across the UK, Europe, and the USA. However, the transatlantic nature of the duo means they can't always perform together and for this current tour, Jackson takes the centre stage joined by Mike Seal on double bass and Simon Campbell on lead guitar.
As poets and travellers at heart, A Different Thread?s potent and though-provoking lyrics deal with reckoning, love and longing, and the call of the open road. Jackson?s blend of raw vocals, wailing harmonica, and fingerpicking guitar is reminiscent of Doc Watson, Neil Young, and Dave Rawlings, while offering songwriting hooks in the style of The Band, The Cranberries, and Bob Dylan. That said, (as a review by Rocking Magpie put it) A Different Thread ?really don?t sound like any other band, and that?s a good thing?
