We're delighted to welcome Sergio Castelló López, the principal clarinettist with the Hallé Orchestra who will be joined by his colleagues Peter Liang, Steven Proctor (violins), Christine Anderson (viola) and Paul Grennan (cello) to perform Brahms' Clarinet Quintet. Having stopped composing in his mid-fifties, Brahms was so inspired by the clarinet playing of Richard Mühlfield that he composed four of his last works for this instrument. The timbre of the clarinet reflects the introspective and melancholic mood of the music. It is beautiful, searching, and full of longing.
Alongside this wonderful quintet, the string quartet will play a beautiful selection of Nordic folk music arrangements, and Sergio will play Stravinsky's three solo pieces for clarinet which bring a folk, jazz and rag-time feel to the concert.
