About The Eric Morecombe Centre
Proudly named after one of Harpenden's most treasured residents and half of the most successful comedy double act of all time; Eric Morecambe, the EMC (Eric Morecambe Centre) is a new, vibrant and busy venue offering a mixture of touring productions, films and exhibitions and it has already made an outstanding cultural mark on the town.
John Eric Bartholomew better known as, Eric Morecambe, moved to Harpenden in the 1960?s and often referred to Harpenden in his comedy. He was voted The ?Comedian of the Century? and he was, of course, comedy partner of the brilliant Ernest Wiseman, together they had the greatest ratings in the history of British television, over 28 and a half million people watched their Christmas show in 1977, a figure that the likes of The X Factor could only dream of.
The state-of-the-art Eric Morecambe Centre is set on the edge of Rothamsted Park, close to the town centre and train station.
Their entertainment programme is extremely varied and regularly hosts live music, tribute acts, comedy, theatre productions, schools concerts, an annual Christmas Panto as well as an excellent film programme.
It is now also recognised as being the hub of the community and hosts everything from preschool activities, dance and exercise classes, exhibitions and youth theatre productions to a wide variety of club and society events.
This venue is a multi-function space involving a main theatre auditorium that seats 511. There are also 2 large function rooms, a history room, bars and a coffee shop with views across the park.
