Filey Literature Festival is thrilled to be hosting this acclaimed performance based on the life of Pennine farmer, Hannah Hauxwell.
Hannah?s story, subject of many TV documentaries, has had us spellbound for decades.
This Gig Theatre Production from Karen and Shelagh is a delightfully thought-provoking mix of spoken word, song and visual imagery illustrating Hannah?s struggle with the elements through her life-enhancing uplifting story.
Reviews from 2019
Written specifically for the Edinburgh Fringe 2019 ?No Through Road? received outstanding reviews such as:
?A beautifully sensitive piece chronicling the life of a remarkable woman.?
?The singing and poetry are beautifully matched to the visuals and it is an oasis of calm in the madness of the festival.?
?The show was amazing. This is the second time I?ve seen it and I?ve picked up extra little snippets that I hadn?t seen the first-time round. It?s just an amazing life?a long life and I would love to learn more about her.?
?No through road...the amazing story of Hannah Hauxwell, Daleswoman, portrayed in spoken word, original songs and film by Shelagh McKay Jones and Karen McDonnell. At Barn on the Loch, Kinghorn recently. A great night.?
?It was terrific. I knew about Hannah Hauxwell and I?ve always been very interested in her and I think it?s just great that you?re keeping her alive because it?s so important that females are kept alive in history because they disappear. So I think it?s wonderful that you?re doing what your doing and just keep doing it and your voice is amazing.?
?I thought the show was fabulous. I was really impressed with the film that was shown and I was impressed by how amazing she looked for the fact that she lived in the country, her skin was beautiful, her hair was beautiful, and she just seemed such a kind and gentle woman. I quickly looked at the book and realised that she lived a long life and she moved into the cottage at the end of it and she had a lot of fame in her time here. It?s amazing. I was quite upset when it ended. I was quite tearful when it finished?.bits of it remind you of your own childhood and being brought in the countryside?sentimental?loved it.?
