Description

The Sam Norris Quartet [SNQ] is alto saxophonist Sam Norris's primary creative project. As well as regular collaborators Jay Verma on piano and Harry Ling on drums, the ensemble features New York bassist Will Sach [Alex Hitchcock] and uses Sam?s compositions and standard tunes as vehicles for exploratory improvisation. Formed in the mould of history?s great sax-led quartets, especially those of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman, the resultant music is high-energy, uncompromising and incorporates both tightly scripted forms and passages of free improvisation. The quartet recently played to a sold-out audience at the Saint Katherine?s Jazz Festival and have also given performances at the Vortex Jazz Club, Oliver?s Jazz Club and the Sandy?s Piano Bar in Oxford.
