Description

To celebrate the release of their split 7" single, Oh Papa and Green Gardens are bringing their sounds to the intimate setting of Cafe#9 on 19th March

Oh Papa emerged from the embers of the Sheffield music scene in the late 2010s, after years of watching beloved local venues change hands and crumble into obscurity. Sheffield, it seemed, had had its heyday. With the hyper-masculinity of the male guitar band setting the template for many young artists striving to get their voices heard, Oh Papa wanted to change the perception of what it means to be an indie band from the North.

Through their songwriting, Oh Papa explore the vulnerability and fragility of ego and learning how to process and express emotion. Taking sonic inspiration from the great singer-songwriters of Laurel Canyon, their first release Papa Les garnered support from BBC Radio 1?s Huw Stephens and BBC Radio 6 Music?s Tom Robinson, the latter praising the ?irresistible Americana groove and understated English vocals?. This earned the band support slots for the likes of Billie Marten, Easy Life, Boy Azooga and Japanese punk legends Shonen Knife.

The success of 2019 single Magnetic (recorded with Sheffield contemporaries Before Breakfast) marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship with producer David C Glover at Tesla Studios.

Oh Papa sought to continue writing and releasing in spite of challenges faced by the music industry in 2020. Their sophomore EP Sitcom was released in April, followed by singles Change That Tune and Take What?s Given. These independent releases were again supported by the BBC outlets, including multiple plays by Huw Stephens and Gemma Bradley, and were followed by the rolling summer groove of Salut Sue in 2021.

With comparisons to the rootsy Americana of Kevin Morby, the wry lyrical content of Andy Shauf and Courtney Barnett, and the subtle intricacies of Blood on the Tracks and Harvest, Oh Papa are continuing a tradition of intimate and insightful songwriting for a new generation.

Leeds? GREEN GARDENS exist in a space between art-rock and experimental pop, their eclectic catalogue going from intimate to dramatic in a heartbeat. Green Gardens' new run of songs are part fables, part musings on posterity, and the rest is energy. The band's eccentric form of songwriting has drawn comparisons with folk-rock heroes Midlake and the music of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
?the art-rock track dazzles as raw emotion pours through the vocals over the shimmering and

shapeshifting backing? - DIY ?effortlessly pretty? - CLASH
