Henri Hill invites you to a relaxed concert featuring a selection of her favourite solo viola music, looking at why the viola has been chosen as the warmest instrumental voice. From Bach to Piazzolla Tangos, to the present day, Henri has recorded several of these works and one has been composed for her.

The viola is the lesser-known instrument of the strings family, but one that has shown versatility and an earthiness closest to the human voice. Henri will use the gallery artwork as inspiration to create new songs with you, showing why the viola is such a great voice, and inspiring all those string players out there to absorb their surroundings.

Afterwards, stay around for an informal Q&A and demonstration about this beautiful instrument and its history. - Bring your own instrument along too or your voice, if you feel inspired to have a go at creating your own music with Henri in the Gallery.

Henri is a classical-trained violist from Bakewell. She studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, stayed as a Junior Fellow, and has since returned to Derbyshire during the Pandemic. You can find her playing all kinds of music, from solo to orchestral across the UK and abroad. Henri especially loves chamber music and collaborating across the arts. She is a Trustee for Music Charity NW Live Arts, who bring Classical and World Musicians together with local Communities to look at how music, art and story-telling can open different conversations. Henri performed at The Green Man to great acclaim in Buxton Fringe 2021 and last December with with viola-flute-harp trio Trilogy Ensemble

Henri studied science at University and will love chatting about palaeontology with you.
