Clerkenwell
Clerkenwell was an ancient parish from the medieval period onwards, Clerkenwell took its name from the Clerks' Well in Farringdon Lane (clerken was the Middle English genitive plural of clerk, a variant of clerc, meaning literate person or clergyman). The first surviving reference to the name is from 1100.

The Monastic Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem had its English headquarters at the Priory of Clerkenwell. (The Blessed Gerard founded the Order to provide medical assistance during the crusades.

Farringdon
It takes its name from the station, which was in turn named after Farringdon Street. There are numerous places in England called Farringdon; all meaning fern covered hill.

Smithfield
In the Middle Ages, it was a broad grassy area known as Smooth Field, Smithfield established itself as London's livestock market, remaining so for almost 1,000 years.
