In this exclusive intimate night, Laura Mvula takes to the stage for a special show on Friday 17th June ahead of her upcoming national tour. Joining her on stage will be long time collaborator and bass player Karl Rasheed Abel, as she presents songs from her entire catalogue in an acoustic setting.
Laua's 2013 debut album Sing To The Moon introduced and firmly positioned her as one of Britain's most innovative talents whose distinctive sound continues to develop. Known for her ability to draw from multiple genres in order to create her own, Laura?s writing style and dexterity are underpinned by her Birmingham Conservatoire degree in composition.
The expansion of Laura?s sound is evident in her catalogue of work. On 2016?s The Dreaming Room, she built on her signature vocal layering and unexpected melodies with the addition of analogue synths and electric guitar lines and, in 2021, her ode to the 80s - Pink Noise, on which she revisits the pop, soul sounds she grew up listening to, elevated synths and intense funk grooves served the purpose of designing a flavoursome, timeless soundworld.
Along the way, Laura?s albums have picked up awards and nods with all three of her albums being nominated for the Mercury Prize - a rare feat in the award?s history.
Pink Noise's musical inspirations lean heavily into the vibrant pop Mvula loved growing up ? Michael and Janet Jackson, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, the list goes on ? it's an album borne out of both intense struggles and the positive realisations that come when you emerge reborn the other side. Lyrically it touches on ideas around break-ups ? both personal and professional ? but also a hard won appreciation for ?being present and being in the moment.?
Drawing from her lived experiences and observations of life, Laura continues to offer an aural landscape that transports listeners to a world of her creation.
