Modern Art Oxford & Divine Schism: Jenny Moore's Mystic Business + Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani Event Title Pic

Description

To celebrate the opening of Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe join us for a night of live music in our Basement.
Together with live music collective Divine Schism, we are excited to host Jenny Moore?s Mystic Business and Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani in our Basement until 10pm.
Jenny Moore?s Mystic Business
Rabble-rousing six-piece ensemble Jenny Moore?s Mystic Business is a testament to the raw power and
untamed joy of communal singing, and features members of Bas Jan, Trash Kit, F*Choir and Bamboo as well
as solo singer-songwriter Rubie.

Hailing from the prairies of Canada, Jenny Moore grew up with a strange brew of American hardcore and gospel music before moving to London to study art. For the last 10 years, she?s straddled the DIY art and music scenes, staging live performances in fields, warehouse and museums alike, and playing in bands including dance-punks Charismatic Megafauna and pop-punk trio Bas Jan (whose debut album Yes I Jan was released on Lost Map in 2018). Jenny runs the Hackney-based feminist F*Choir and was the first artist in residence at Borealis Festival for Experimental music in Bergen, Norway.

Mystic Business draw inspiration from artists such as Meredith Monk, Laurie Anderson, Joan La Barbara and Robert Ashley, as well as feminist poets like Sharon Olds and Lorrie Moore, and David Byrne?s musical use of language, breaking down words into rhythmic tools. Jenny Moore?s Mystic Business released their self-titled debut album in 2018 via Sheffield label The Audacious Art Experiment.

Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani
Zahra is a musician, composer, performer and award-winning director of the Young Women?s Music Project.

She is based in Oxford where she was born and raised as a second-generation immigrant, her father having emigrated to the UK from Iran and her mother being Irish. Thoughts on identity run as an undercurrent through her creative process as she connects the different cultures she embodies.

They Say, the first single from her upcoming EP, introduces this scope that draws on themes of protection, parenthood, survival and recovery in the wake of abuse. A wake up call, a call to action.
