Formed in 2019, The People Versus have been quickly recognised as one of the most exciting talents coming out of the Folk Music scene, bringing their harmonies, driving rhythms and storytelling tradition to the forefront of their sound. Their chamber pop touches mean songs are richly imagined tapestries of sound, and absolutely mesmerising to watch. Lead-singer Alice?s vocals are truly bewitching, with a soft fragility in their tone counteracted by an assertive, persuasive delivery, accompanied by lovely vocal harmonies, beautifully subtle and melodic cello and some impressive guitar work, with constantly sweeping highs and lows that keep the songs moving and shifting whilst never allowing the lead vocal line to get lost or confused. The band borrow from a variety of genres and traditions; their combined voices and instrumental lines swoop, circle and support the beguiling voice and personality of Alice Edwards. Each song is taut with feeling and longing, they draw their remarkable lyricism from many sources, with many inspired by Greek myth and tales from Shakespeare. Their songs aren?t just pretty melodies, but stories worth paying attention to.
