An Evening With Humbird & Luke Callen At Cafe#9

Event Type

Genre : Music - Folk/blues/world

Description

Inspired by the crystalline chill of the north country she calls home in Minnesota, Humbird combines a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale. Humbird?s music moves between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. The music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house. It leaves bread crumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.

Siri Undlin witnessed the power of storytelling in her childhood home and began writing music and performing in church choirs and in Irish ensembles from a young age. Her voice, which contains the unwavering fortitude of hymnal melodies, reveals her traditional background.

In 2019, Humbird released the critically acclaimed, debut full-length, Pharmakon, which introduced us to Humbird?s songcraft and harmonic folk style. With Folk Alley calling the album ?... an absolutely hypnotic listening experience.? Atwood Magazine described it as music wrapped in ?gentle rebellion?. The release garnered millions of online streams and a wide range of accolades, including 89.3FM The Current?s ?Best Local Albums Of The Year?, one of City Page?s ?Picked To Click? Awards, ?Best Minnesota Albums? from the Star Tribune, and as an official showcasing artist at SXSW in Austin.

Most recently, the material on Humbird?s sophomore record Still Life (October 2021) has already received enthusiastic praise from within the folk world ? awarded as one of Kerrville Folk Fest?s New Folk winners for 2021

At the intersection of Harry Smith?s Old Weird America ? the songs of heartworn highways ? and the tumult of today you can find the music of Luke Callen. The songs ? equal parts tragic comedy and hopeless reverie ? paint a picture of the places and people that make up his earthly home. A poet ? a player ? a folk singer ? Luke has traversed his country unraveling tall tales ? short tunes and all that?s hidden underneath.

Originally from the river town of La Crosse, Wisconsin ? the heart of the Driftless Region on the Mississippi River ? and currently living in Minneapolis, Minnesota by way of Colorado Luke brings his humble sense of humor and humanity wherever he may go. His last two solo albums ? below your knows (2019) and Hard Sardine (2021) ? reach from the ethereal to the eternally real ? whimsical walks in the out of doors to hopelessness and heartache and all the in betweens. Luke is currently working on his third studio album in Cleveland, MN with the storied and critically acclaimed producer and songwriter Erik Koskinen (Charlie Parr - Haley - David Huckfelt - Trampled by Turtles). This most recent collection of songs combines Luke?s knack and passion for balladry with his innate sense of groove - falling somewhere between the rhythm - the rolling - and the written.

Luke has played hundreds of shows spanning both coasts, the American west, south and heartland. He has had the opportunity to provide support for Dom Flemons, Dead Horses, The Dustbowl Revival, Kacy & Clayton, James McMurtry, Whiskey Shivers, Charlie Parr and The Lowest Pair among others. He has become a frequent performer at The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, OK - Salmonfest in Ninilchick, AK and Midwest Music Fest held in Winona, MN and La Crosse, WI.

?No dog ever eats Luke Callen?s homework. He does it all. He turns it in ahead of time. Not for a grade. Not for extra credit. It?s his work and he?s good at it. Poet. Singer. Player. Just listen. First he captures your attention. You want to make comparisons with the giants whose shoulders he stood on. But don?t. He?s plenty tall enough in his own bare feet and his shoulders are wide enough to hold up the next batch of poets, singers, players. Keep listening. Now he captures your imagination. Luke is the hitch-hiker who picks you up. Get in. Toss your bindle in the back. Have you got a couple bucks for gas? No matter. He?s going take you all around the world. Pay attention. He?s going to show you everything that?s in it. And it?s right Below Your Knows.?
