June?s Bossaphonik night is on Friday 24th and for the first time in Oxord we?re delighted to welcome The Fontanas.
Rooted in soul and soaked in funky Latin & Brazilian influences, The Fontanas have found the sweet spot between tight funk grooves and swinging Latin rhythms. Taking a range of influences from the likes of The Dap Kings and Banda Black Rio, The Fontanas have built a solid live reputation through a series of knockout European tours and headline festival performances.
Featuring the inimitable Kay Elizabeth on vocals and harnessed by producer and band leader Sam Fontanas, the 7 piece band come together to produce a sound which packs in Brazilian percussion alongside a killer brass section and delivered via a squad of friends and musicians who play in bands with the likes of Incognito, Alice Russell and Mr Scruff.
2020 saw the EP release which included their modern day version of Brazilian classic ?Capoeira Mata Um? that received generous airplay from Cerys Matthews on BBC6 Music amongst others.
With time on their hands in lockdown, the band set to work on completing their much anticipated 2nd album which includes a selection of singles and guest remixes to support the release.
Opening single ?Love Be The Weapon? welcomes producer Jon Moon (Amy Whinehouse/Back To Black) into the Fontanas familia to deliver a super charged traditional funk anthem, with a vintage Daptone studio feel that sits at home amongst the best modern funk pioneers. The album 'The Luxury Of Time' draws on a range of influences from vintage soul and funk to heavyweight Latin and Brazilian grooves and skilfully fuses these elements together to form a modern day dance record ideally placed for changing times.
