Beethoven - String Quartet in B flat major, op. 18 no. 6
Mendelssohn - String Quartet in F minor, op. 80
We are delighted to welcome the Benyounes Quartet to Oakham School for the first time, in which our Head of Strings, Emily Holland, performs as a founding member. Their one-hour programme contrasts wonderful string quartets from the pen of the great composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Felix Mendelssohn. Beethoven?s work explores a wide range of characters in its movements, embracing an exhilarating opening movement, a sober and ornate Adagio, an astonishing rhythmic Scherzo, and a daring concluding movement entitled ?La Malinconia'. Mendelssohn?s final string quartet, composed in the closing months of his life, is grief-laden, agitated and emotionally charged as he responded to the tragic news of his sister?s death. Embracing a jarring Scherzo movement and some solace in the lyrical Adagio movement, this concert offers variety aplenty in the hands of this acclaimed professional ensemble.
