Can we accurately recall our own childhood, and what it would feel like to be eight again? Writer/director CĂ©line Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) manages to convey such a magical notion in what was hailed as ?a jewel? at the Berlin Film Festival. When Nelly (Josephine Sanz) wanders into the woods near her deceased grandmother?s home, she discovers a hut just like the fort her own mother once used. Then, crucially, she meets a girl who not only shares her mother?s name, but also bears an uncanny physical resemblance to herself. Could this be her actual mother, now also aged eight? ?I fell instantly under its spell,? says The Guardian?s Peter Bradshaw. (S)
