A romcom set in 1970s Los Angeles that?s chaotic and highly original ? not least because the plotting has a mind of its own, and whatever?s going to happen next is rarely predictable. The two fresh-faced teen leads in this Paul Thomas Anderson triumph seem to operate in a spontaneous world of their own, and the delightful and authentic dialogue feels like it?s composed on the hoof. Wittiest of all, though, is the juxtaposition of our youngsters with well-weathered A-list stars such as Sean Penn, Tom Waits and Bradley Cooper whose bravura nudge-nudge performances give them a chance to show off their full range of acting tricks and skills. Much to our delight.
