The Snelling Lecture 2022 will be delivered by Dame Sara Khan and is titled ?Countering Extremism in a Liberal Democracy?.
Dame Sara Khan is a pioneer and expert in the counter-extremism field.
In 2008 she co-founded and co-directed Inspire, one of the first female-led grassroots counter-extremism organisations in Britain. Since then, she has written articles for numerous national and international newspapers, covering a range of topics including Muslim women, British Islam, and counter-extremism, and is also the author of the book 'The Battle for British Islam: Reclaiming Muslim Identity from Extremism', published in 2016.
She was named as one of the Top 10 Influencers of 2015 by the BBC Woman?s Hour Power List; appeared on Desert Island Discs in 2016; and was included, in 2018, in The Evening Standard?s Progress 1000 as one of London?s most influential people.
In 2018, Sara was appointed Britain?s first Counter-Extremism Commissioner, being tasked with carrying out a strategic assessment of extremism across England and Wales. This led to the publication of the report Challenging Hateful Extremism in 2019, as well as a number of other significant publications including the landmark legal review Operating with Impunity, published in February 2021.
In March 2021, Sara was appointed?by the Prime Minister as?the Government?s Independent Adviser for Social Cohesion and Resilience, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle extremism in British communities. She was awarded a DBE in the 2022 New Year?s Honours List in recognition of her long-standing counter-extremism work.
