Description

Kate Green has been singing almost as long as she's been talking. She was born into a Strathclyde family with deep Irish roots and its own living tradition of song and music, though she didn't dip her toes into the folk scene until she moved to Sheffield in the early '80s. She spent three years touring Scotland and the North of England with Badger In The Bag, picking up the accolade of Singer Of The Year at the 1992 National Folk Festival.??After the Badgers disbanded, Kate assembled a backing combo consisting of Patrick Walker (fiddle, viola, guitar and harmony voice) and Raymond Greenoaken (mandola, guitar. banjo, concertina and Indian harmonium) and developed a striking and eclectic repertoire embracing Celtic trad, American old-time and blues, and covers of Van Morrison and Nina Simone.

Her 2007 release "An Unkindness of Ravens" attracted warm praise from all quarters, ?A stunning disc which really shouldn?t be ignored? was the verdict from fRoots, but a high-pressure frontline job in Mental Health and assorted other distractions have combined to keep her out of the studio?until now. "A Dark Carnival" is her first CD release in a number of years. It consists of traditional songs from both sides of the Atlantic, a handful of outstanding songs by contemporary songwriters (Lal Waterson, Peter Bellamy and Memphis Minnie), and five compositions of her own. To her self-written material Kate brings many years of intimate acquaintance with the traditional muse and the best of modern songwriting. Kate comes highly recommended by Barbara Parry having recently reviewed the album.
