Annemarie Federle horn
Dvo?ák - In Nature?s Realm Overture
Glière - Horn Concerto
Gipps - Song for Orchestra
Grant Still - Symphony No.5 ?The Western Hemisphere?
Spring is now with us and we intend to celebrate its arrival. Dvo?ák?s rarely-heard overture, In Nature?s Realm, opens the concert. Written in 1891, the overture was one of three works intended to be performed together. Dvo?ák composed these works at his secluded home in the Vysoká forest, and his deep reverence for nature informs all of them.
We are delighted to welcome Annemarie Federle, one of the UK?s brightest young stars, to perform Reinhold Glière?s Concerto for Horn. Composed in 1951, this glorious concerto depicts the inner spirit of the dedicated individual and the beauty contained within. We are proud to perform another work by Ruth Gipps - her Song for Orchestra. Composed in 1948, it is a short tone poem.
We close the concert with the UK première of William Grant Still?s fifth and final symphony. We began in 2010 with the UK première of his 2nd symphony, and will be performing the rest of the symphonic output of this important and highly respected US composer over the next three seasons.
