The up and coming Barberini piano trio prefers to perform in intimate recital rooms rather than vast concert halls. Romanian pianist Cristian Sandrin, Japanese born violinist Eriko Nagayama and Scots cellist Hugh Mackay met as students at the Royal Academy of Music and bonded over their love of the chamber music repertoire. The venue will transport you to the refined atmosphere of a Georgian London salon with these sparkling interpretations of miniature masterpieces written by three great composers at the height of their powers.
PROGRAMME
MOZART Trio No. 5 in C major K 548 (1788)
Allegro ? Andante cantabile ? Allegro
Mozart's piano trios are ideal salon music. His late trios, of which K548 is one, are notable for giving both the violin and the cello a newly independent voice within the composition rather than simply accompanying the keyboard.
BEETHOVEN Trio in B-flat Major op 97 ?Archduke? (1811)
Allegro Moderato ? Scherzo (allegro) ? Andante cantabile, ma perĂ² con moto ? Allegro moderato
Beethoven dedicated this work to his great friend, pupil and patron the music-loving Archduke Rudolf of Austria. The composer indicated during a rehearsal that it should not be played gently, but with much energy and force.
BRAHMS Trio No. 3 op 101 in C minor (1886)
Allegro energico ? Presto non assai ? Andante grazioso ? Finale. Allegro molto
Finally Brahms, the apotheosis of High Romanticism, treats us to a hypnotising narrative of nervous tension from the breathless opening bars to the complex rhythms that mark the conversations between the strings and the piano as they respond to each others thoughts.
