Mozart's Magic Flute overture introduces a fairy tale, with themes of love, and of good versus evil.
Gustav Mahler?s Das Lied von der Erde, a song cycle and symphony combined, was written under the shadow of his impending death, when Mahler knew that he had not long to live and his settings of Chinese poetry (in German) express all his longing for life and love of the world he knew he was leaving, culminating in a deeply moving farewell.
In Arthur Bliss?s Checkmate Suite, Love and Death play across the checkered board.
