How The Ord Cross Returned To Berwick By Benjamin Westwood: A Ucb/fobdm&a Talk Event Title Pic

Description

Berwick Museum & Art Gallery will have the Ord Cross on display from next year.

Found locally by the banks of the River Tweed, it is a fascinating re-dicovered Anglo-Saxon object, giving us more insight into the period when Northumbria was the cradle of Christianity.

This free talk by Benjamin Westwood, Finds Liaison Officer for the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme, will explain what has to happen when something this rare and important is found. The talk will also show how, with support from the Friends of Berwick & District Museum and Archives, it has found its way back to the Tweed, to its new home at Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, and, of course, discuss the cross's significance and context.

Part of the Union Chain Bridge project's free public talks series, this event is held in collaboration with the Friends of Berwick & District Museum and Archives.

UCB talks are inspired by the heritage and setting of the Union Chain Bridge. The bridge is the world's oldest suspension bridge still used by vehicles, although it is currently closed for conservation. It crosses the River Tweed, linking Scottish Borders and Northumberland, so finding out about a golden cross, lost on the riverbank about a thousand years ago is a perfect topic to explore.

Join us on 11th November at 7pm, at Berwick Town Hall for the free talk.
Please book in advance from www.wegottickets.com/UnionChainBridge

Please note there are steps up to the Town Hall, but please do contact us if you have any queries about accessibility issues.
