Genre : Music - General

Description

On Friday 18th November Bossaphonik welcomes the sizzling Afro-funk of Ghanaian-born master percussionist and vocalist with his 7 piece band ? Afla Sackey and Afrik Bawantu.

Afla Formed the band back in 2007, it?s blend of vibrant African rhythms, fast animated horn section and heavy bass line which brings a whole new definition to the Afro-funk genre. Afla feels that within this band he is expressing his musical dreams of blending traditional Ghanaian music with dynamic Afrobeat grooves to life, topping it off with an irresistibly funky twist. Along with Afro-funk and Afrobeat, the band performs some highlife numbers. They have a residency at Camden?s Jazz Cafe on a themed highlife night and are able to play a full set of pure Ghanaian-style highlife music.

Afla?s talent has been recognised by many well established musicians who he has collaborated and recorded with as a session musician ? the likes of Sun Ra, Seun Kuti, Ginger Baker, Sons of Kemet, Tony Allen and Dele Sosimi. He originally started his creative life as a dancer in the Bukom Dance Ensemble in Ghana, his elders soon recognised the musical potential in his youth and encouraged him with careful guidance and training. Henceforth Afla came to London with the Kakatsitsi Master Drummers of Ghana and has since thoroughly immersed himself in the UK music scene.

His first EP ?Noko Hewen? and LP ?Life On The Street? received huge critical acclaim and were nominated in the World Music Network chart. They shook up the world music scene with the unique and original style of Afla?s compositions in addition to gifted musicians in the band. Afla is also an inspiring educator ? he has been an Afrobeat teacher at the Royal Academy of Music and continues as a guest lecturer and workshop facilitator in universities as far flung as Japan, Singapore and Argentina.

The band are a permanent fixture at many festivals in the UK and Europe and headlined Africa On The Square Festival and performed at London African Festival, Shambala, Secret Garden Party, Green Man, Africa Utopia and many others.
