Street Grease
Scratching and clawing its way into being, Street Grease is a project spawned in the midst of a global pandemic, out of a room the size of a prison cell where co-conspirators Maud Neesam (The JCQ, Torrid Horror) and Caine Hemingway (Torrid Horror) sat face-to-face in spitting distance of one another, thrashing out a set of violent, post-traumatic songs that would eventually become their first EP, Fawn.
Caine, returning to the instrument for the first time in over a decade, would process a world collapsing by drumming until his hands were bloody and blistered. While Maud, finally with an opportunity to push an old charity shop-acquired Roland MC909 to its most menacing limits, would drown out what was left of the outside world.
Taking the fruits of their bloody labour to Bear Bites Horse Studios for a five day recording session, Wayne Adams (Petbrick, Big Lad, Ladyscraper) joined the fold as a collaborator as well as producer. The result of which, is a multilayered, genre-skipping visceral dirge of an EP that draws you in close with intriguing electronic layers and sleazy-seductive basslines that find a groove in the grime before viciously lashing out before you get too comfortable.
With Lewis Reynolds (Meet Me in St. Louis), Charlie Simmonds and Nancy on electronics now added to the lineup, Street Grease is ready to flow out into the wider world with full-band, live shows and more writing in the pipeline. Chances are, they're going to need a bigger cell.
