Description

The April Bossaphonik event takes place on Friday 21st and for the first time we?ll be welcoming the Latin jazz dynamite of all-female ensemble ?Colectiva.?

The band explore the spaces between Afro-Latin music and jazz while reflecting on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment in a sound they have affectionately dubbed jazz tropicaliente (hot-tropical-jazz)

Anti-hierarchical in arrangement and structure, Colectiva exist as a vessel and platform in which women instrumentalists of an advanced level come together through their love and appreciation for Afro-Latin and jazz genres, to compose collaboratively in the spirit of sisterhood. Crafting thoughtful arrangements rooted in the sonorities of Africa, Latin America and the diaspora, they have birthed a sound rich in bold horn lines, jazz harmony and Afro-Latin groove!

With the London jazz scene blossoming, it was impossible for these musicians not to catch that vibe, having been hugely influenced by the Latin scene of New York in the 1970s and its relationship to the jazz scene of that era. They set about bridging these two worlds and exploring sounds outside of the strictest Afro-Latin jazz tradition, they have come up with a new sound, London-style.

Last September the band released their second single How do you like your ladies? A song that embodies female rage, channeling their frustration of patriarchy and it?s discontents. Released on pioneering UK label Jazz Re:Freshed, it is a 3 minute party-starter rich in Afro-Latin rhythm, fiery horn motifs, salsa influences and jazz-inflected breaks. The band have so far also performed at many iconic UK venues, including a sold out show at Camden?s Jazz Cafe, performances at The South Bank Centre, Roundhouse, Barbican Centre and have been part of line-ups curated by Nubya Garcia, Soho Radio, Glastonbury Festival and Worldwide FM.

Statistics show that only 5% of jazz musicians in the industry are female. This shocking fact shows that artists such as Colectiva are vital in encouraging young women to follow their musical dreams.
