In New York in the late 1960s, artist John Salt (1937 ? 2021) found himself in the forefront of the new and popular Photorealist Movement. Adopting the subject of abandoned wrecked vehicles and rundown trailer parks, he applied his paint by airbrush through hundreds of hand-cut, lace-like stencils. These techniques and American motifs continued to characterise his work after his return to the UK in 1980.
The talk will be given by Tim Craven (a former Curator of Southampton City Art Gallery) who, as a friend of the artist has a unique insight into his philosophy, approach and technique.
This talk accompanies the commemorative exhibition In Focus: John Salt; on display at the gallery until 1 July by courtesy of the artist?s family.
Please be aware that at least part of the talk may involve standing to view the artwork in the gallery.
A-OK Auto, pictured here, was purchased for Southampton?s permanent collection from his solo exhibition The Hidden Hand: John Salt in 2004.
